Ban Australia’s domestic trade in ivory
Australia still permits the domestic sale of elephant ivory and rhino horn, even though international trade is banned. Items claimed to be 'antique' or 'second-hand' can still be legally sold, creating a loophole that allows illegally imported ivory or horn to find its way to market. It also sustains demand.
The ivory and rhino horn trade continues to drive poaching and puts elephants and rhinos at grave risk.
In 2019, the Australian Government promised to ban domestic trade in these products, and yet that promise remains unfulfilled six years later. Countries like the United States, United Kingdom, and China have already acted. Australia must not fall behind.
It's time to close the loophole and end elephant ivory and rhino horn sales in Australia for good.
