Stop allowing Queensland farmers to shoot flying foxes
Recently, the Queensland Government quietly reinstated the shooting of flying foxes for crop protection.
Shooting any animal raises serious animal welfare concerns, particularly when animals are small and move quickly, making it difficult to ensure a quick death. Injured animals may suffer for extended periods, young can be orphaned, while low visibility at night makes it harder to accurately identify species, increasing risks to protected wildlife.
There are effective, non-lethal ways to protect crops, but instead of working with famers to find and use these solutions, the government has chosen lethal control.
Putting aside the risk of animal suffering, we should question our willingness to accept killing animals when effective, non-lethal alternatives exist.
A vote on this issue is expected in parliament soon–there is still time to speak up.
